Night Fishing - Book Club

Nat and her father have taken their boat Markita out to Gull Rock for some night fishing.
But as darkness falls there is an emergency onboard. Mayday! Mayday!

This is one of the texts in our book club. In Room 17 we choose which book we would like to read and discuss. Feel free to join in the discussion on this blog if you have read Night Fishing, or want to comment on our discussion.

Chapter 1
My dad used to take us fishing but it was for trout in a river. Have any of you got memories of fishing trips with your family?

"It makes a great master but a terrible servant" What do you think this means?

I have once caught a ten pound snapper with the help of my cousin and my granddad It was on my uncles boat.

I think that that means that you always need to check any time any place anywhere.

I have caught many wonderful fish in my life but the main memory was out by Birken Head north shore with my papa rob who passed away two months ago.the day before he died we set sail and I caught a 50 pound king fish.

I think it means that you have to check any time and make sure it's safe.

50lbs!!! that is a whopper. That is a nice memory to have of your Papa Rob Calvin.

A 10lb snapper would be a great catch too.

The thing that Nat's dad is referring to as being a great master but a terrible servant is the sea. If you respect it like you would a master you will be safe. If you think you can control it like a servant, you could get in trouble...nobody can control the sea.

Chapter 2
Terns feeding, dolphins.. what a great trip these two are having.

I was once on a boat when a pod of dolphins came by. We cut the motor to stay and watch them but I got so excited I jumped in the water clothes and all, to swim with them. Unfortunately I was so out of breath with excitement, I couldn't catch my breath to dive down much and get a good look. Still, an amazing experience.

I have also seen gulls working the water where there are big schools of fish. Good places to drop a line.

You two both sound like you have had boating experiences, what are some of your memorable events?

No i've never caught a fish but I have caught an Eel before in my aunty's farm river.

What I think "a great master but a terrible servant" means is a great master does something good for you and bad master is something bad.

My only memorial moment I had was once, I was standing in the sea and I saw a fish floating between my legs because I was eating my sandwich. I think it wanted some of my sandwich!

Wyatt,

iv'e never seen wild dolphins like Isara but I have seen red gurnads jumping and king fish eating smaller fish and that was cool!

red gurnads look like flying fish and my brother Angelo thought they were flying fish.

Chapter 3
Nat’s dad seems pretty safety conscious on the boat. What risks does he eliminate?
What safety precautions do you remember your family taking when you were last our boating?

The author mentions the ‘phosphorescence’ shining in the water. i have seen this out on the water at night. Can you find out what it is?

Chapter 4
We have had the orientation of the story, this chapter has the problem?
I think Nat does a pretty good job of coping with the emergency. Do you think you would have coped so well? How come?

Isara said...

No because if the person was close to you then you would just do what ever. Well that's what I would do would you?

Wyatt said...

Not losing power for the Lights being On.

Phosphorescence is kind of like a light in the dark, it shimmers in the dark.

Wyatt said...

No because I haved not been out dishing and I would FREAK out

Chapter 5 and 6
Which safety items does Nat use to get help to come?
Nat had to make some pretty important decisions. What experiences have you had of coping in a crisis? How do you think you went?

Flares, torches, radio.

But i've never been in a crisis compared to that.

a torch hand flares and a shipping radio.

I have been in a situation like this up north when me and Angelo were out camping by our selves in the bush.He fell in to a ditch and was unconcious.I had no reception so I had to jump down and calm down and slap his face till he woke up.he did after the 2nd slap!
