Looking For Amelia - Bookclub

Emily doesn't want to move, but the old house her family have shifted to is full of secrets and soon provide a mystery for Emily  and her brother to solve.

This is one of the texts in our book club. In Room 17 we choose which book we would like to read and discuss. Feel free to join in the discussion on this blog if you have read Looking For Amelia, or want to comment on our discussion.

Have you had to shift houses? What was it like?

The doll that Mrs Fraser found was a 'china doll', what type of doll is this?

Gloria said...

I shifted from my aunty's house to my great aunty's house. I really didn't want to go at first because of no internet and no sky. Packing our stuff and unpacking was pretty hard. 'China doll' is a kind of doll that is made out of china. And it has a china face, if dropped it will break because it isn't plastic. Porcelain is what is used as the materiel.

I hate moving houses. Its really annoying, because I'm used to the old house.

Lisia Misa said...

Yeah, same here. When my family and I moved here, I was so sad because I really miss my cousins and my old friends.

I've shifted houses two times, and this is my third time. I don't really know why we moved to my aunty's house, but we did. I can't remember what we left at our old house because we moved such a long time ago.

The doll that Mrs.Fraser had given Emily was a china doll. I know that I haven't seen a china doll in real life but I've have found out what it is. Its a doll made partially out of glazed porcelain. This doll has painted molded hair and clothes made out of cloth.

Moving to my great aunty's house was hard but I really like it there now. We have purchased sky and internet. I like it but I really do miss my dog Nala.

There has been a lot of shifting in this group! I think that shifting wouldn't be so bad as long as you didn't have to move schools.

I don't think I've ever seen a real china doll either. I wonder if they are even made any more?

Gloria got me thinking about why china is called china, does it come from China?

Chapter 2
Rick sounds like the ultimate big brother.
I have 3 brothers and my experience is similar to Emily's. I got on with the brothers who were 6 and 10 years different from my age, really well as a kid. But the one who was only 1 year different..... well, to say we squabbled would be an understatement!
Luckily we have grown up and that doesn't happen any more.
What is your experience with brothers?
The closer the age gap the more annoying they seem?
Do you have brothers? Would you want them?

Taeshell said...

I only have one brother. I think he is more behaved than my sisters, because they always argue.

Jorja said...

Well I've got 2 older brothers who are sometimes mean and kind, but their always funny. I'm very grateful for my older brothers because their a little bit helpful at times.

Lisia Misa said...

Unfortunately, I don't have any brothers.... only annoying little sisters. Anyway, I would so love to have a baby brother.

Jonita said...

I have TWO big brothers. I think that you're right, " the closer the age gap, the more annoying they seem". I reckon that having big or even little brothers is always chaos, but you sometimes DO have an advantage of having them, if you do love one another though! Although at the end of the day, I'm glad to have my brothers:)

Well, the thing is I don't have brothers or sisters. I would like a brother, one like Rick would be fine. I wouldn't really know what's it like. But yeah, it would be really fun to have a brother. People who have brothers should be grateful because some people don't have any. :)

Good point, we shouldn't complain about them. We are lucky to have the family we do have.

Chapter 3
What do you notice about the toys kids had in the 1930s and the ones you have now?

Gloria said...

Well, Amelia was made out of china and as I said before if dropped it will break but now that we have plastic dolls, it doesn't break easily. I think that's what it is. I'm not so sure........ ;(

Jorja said...

Well, I think that our toys are probably more better than the 1930's because they are much more advanced.

Taeshell said...

Well, I haven't actually seen toys kids had in the 1930s. But I think that if you would get a toy from way back then, it wouldn't last that long. If you were to drop it, it would break. The toy's we have these days, would probably be better than the toy's in the 1930s. Some toys that kids played with in those days, (like skipping ropes, journals, books, dolls, and spinning tops, which is sort of like Bay blade's but, made out of wood) are still sold in shops, and different places.

Jonita said...

I'm the same as Taeshell, I haven't really seen toys from the 1980's, unless you consider a China Doll a toy from that time.I think that the toys these days are more stronger, and well operated then the ones that from back then.

Chapter 4
What can yo find out about Polio? Why isn’t it a danger to us now?

Taeshell said...

Polio is a very bad infection that can lead to Paralysis, breathing problems, and sometimes death. Polio is caused by a contagious virus, which humans normally catch. I think the reason why we don't get this virus, is because we can get Polio vaccine.

Jorja said...

Well I found out that polio is a very bad infection that can effect nerves and lead to paralysis. This disease is cause by infections with poliovirus. Yeah Taeshell I think that the reason why we don't get the virus now is because we can get Polio vaccine.

Lisia Misa said...

Polio is an illness that could make your arms and legs unmoveable and it will leave its victims unable to walk. Polio is not a danger now because there is a cure to it.

Polio is a disease that can effect the nerves and may paralyse you. Back in the olden days it was common for people to catch Polio but today it's rare. There is a kind of massage invented by a lady called Sister Kenny which helps the legs move again and you will be able to walk again, that's why Polio doesn't effect us anymore. That's what I think.

Jonita said...

Polio is a sickness, caused by contagious viruses that can spread easily. Unfortunately, sometimes it lead to, like Taeshell said, breathing problems and death. None of that is a worry now because we have lots of cures:)

Chapter 5 and 6
What do you think were the first indications that Eleanor had polio?
Have you ever found anything interesting in houses you have moved into?

Jonita said...

I think that in signs of Polio was having fever, and crying a lot. Also being unable to move some parts of your body is a very common indicator too, along with headaches and a sore throat.

And I've haven't really seen anything weird or creepy when I move into a new house.

Jorja said...

I think that having Polio must've been very hard. I mean It would be actually very hard for me to be unable to move. I've actually haven't moved houses so no I've found nothing that interesting.

Lisia said...

I have moved into many different house, but I have never discovered any interesting. I think it was her sore throat, headaches and her being too tired to look for Amelia.

Taeshell said...

I haven't found anything interesting in the houses I've moved in. Well, I think I haven't.

Gloria said...

Well, signs may include sore throat, headaches, muscle aches and a fever. I've moved into lots houses and I haven't found anything weird.
