Will.I.Am visits Pt England School

This Morning after morning tea we had a very special assembly. The back door was jam packed with a lot of media. There were very very huge tripods, lots of microphones and a large Camera. We knew it was a special person but not his/her name.

We all became silent as soon as Mr Burt came. He started talking and said "who knows Black Eyed Peas?" And we all put our hands up and started talking about Fergue and Will.I.Am. Our whole school including the Manaiakalani schools remained silent and Mr Burt said "guess who..........Will.I.Am." Then we were all excited but he was still on his way.

There were Hallenstein posts on the wall. It is because Hallenstein Brother are the ones who payed Will.I.Am to come to our school. Hallensteins payed him a lot like for his flight.

I was just sitting on the floor but I saw some people walking up onto the stage. It was the Kapa Haka group and they were going to do a performance. But before they did it Patrick came in front of the stage and said a speech (Waiata).

The Manaiakalani schools even us were so exciting as soon as he came. Mr Burt introduced him to all of us and gave the mice to him so he can talk about his life. He said he was from Los Angeles and lived in a Government housing. His mum never had a job and he didn't know who his dad was.

Mr Will.I.Am came because he gave us a very special gift. It was a $100.000 card. We were so surprised and had to share our gift and so excited! It is his donate and his charity is called I.Am.Angled and he is Angled, amazing and gifted!

Core Sampling like a Scientist

As part of our new Learning Inquiry this term we have been rotating around different teachers to have Antarctica immersion activities.
This afternoon , we have been learning about core samples and I learned a lot from Miss Ouano. We learned about the things scientists use at Antarctica and why. 
Today, we were lucky. Because we got to core sample a cupcake! It was kind of like how Geologists do it:)

Thinking Hats Reflection on Netbooks 2012

At Pt England school everyone from year 5 to 8 know about netbooks.

Having a netbook makes everyone's learning a lot faster. We don’t just work at school, we can also continue on our work at home and on the weekends too.

Sharing our work is now a lot easier with our blogs and netbook. We can share our anything with the world. Sometimes they even give us ideas of how we can improve our work.

Something not so good about the netbooks is that it is quite hard to draw. Also many people think that the screens are too small and I agree.

One thing that the netbook should have is a movie editor. It would be good to have one so that we could make movies at home and at school without going on the Imacs. It should also have a mouse so that we can draw things quicker and easier.

Somebody I Used to Know - Manaiakalani Film Festival

Gloria and her friends Lisia and Isara  watched the very clever music video of the Gotye song Somebody That I used to Know, and thought they could produce their own version.

This movie is completely done by these year 6 children.

This is the process they went through:
research different music videos and discuss concepts
plan and practise body and fabric painting,
learn lyrics, practise singing and record their voices
story board action and acting
film many takes
match their audio to the film
cleverly edit the movie (this was Gloria's masterpiece)

How To Make a Cake - by Doris

1.Always wash your hand first

2.In a medium sized bowl,melt the butter on high for 1 minute

3.Stir the eggs,sugar,and vanilla

4.Beat the mixture well

5.Stir in the flour,baking powder,and cocoa.Use a sieve.

add some chopped nuts if want to.

6.Spread the mixture in 20cm baking dish.Microwave on high for 5 to 7 minutes.

7.Let the cake cool in the dish.

8.Then add some sprinkle on the icing sugar

Skinks - by Taamai

There are 2 type of lizards that are native to New Zealand, Skinks and Geckos. Tuataras are native too, but they are not lizards.
                                                                   
Their habitats can be anywhere on the seashore, rocky areas, cold places and in the forest  and on the ground. We have to protect the area they live in because skinks are protected.
                                                   
Skinks have small eyes but can see really well. They have to blink so that their eyes can keep clean and moist.
                                                                  
Sinks are mainly carnivores. They eat insects, spiders and bugs. Sometimes they like to eat fruits from trees.
                                                                  
Skinks have predators like birds and Tuataras. They can run really first to escape their enemies. Skins lose their tail when they are escaping their predators but it grows back.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                           
I am glad that Sinks are protected so that they are in New Zealand for ever.

Olympic Symbols

Baron Pierre De Coubertin invented the Olympic symbol and also the flag. All the rings are interlocking. Did you know that the rings are these colours because every flag had at least 1 of them?


The Olympic flag has 5 rings which are on a white background. At the opening ceremony the flag is hoisted up the pole. It shall stay there the whole time of the games, but when the games end it is brought down at the closing ceremony.

Do you know what the motto is for the Olympic Games? It has 3 words and 2 of them start with ‘s’. It is swifter, higher, stronger. The motto encourages the competitors to do their very best, but the most important thing is not to win, but to take part.


The flame is one of the best known features of the Olympic games and it is also a memory of the origins. It can only be lit by the sun's rays in Olympia, Greece. Then by relay it gets carried from Olympia to the host city.


On the first day of the Olympic Games the flame is carried into the stadium. It is then transferred from the torch to the cauldron where it stays for the whole of the games. It is extinguished on the final day of the Olympics.

Ancient Olympic Chariot Racing

Did you know chariot racing was the most popular sports in the Ancient Greek Olympics? It was a very dangerous sport, and it was often it was just to show of soldiers' strength. Most of the time they competed in the hippo drome.

The hippodrome was a semi circle.In Greek words hippo ment horse and dromo ment race or course.The hippodrome was similar to the  Roman Circus.

Taeshell critiques Starry Starry Night

This painting was painted by the famous Vincent Van Gogh. He painted Starry starry night in the year 1889, one year after he painted Sunflowers. He is a very talented artist.

Blue is the main color for this painting, but the colour that stands out and makes it hopeful is yellow. Shining gold stars stand out from the blue exaggerated sky. The contrast makes it very cool, that's when it's bright up the top, then dark down the bottom.

There are different kind of objects. Like the cypress tree, and a church. There is also a small and peaceful village, shiny gold stars, swirly wind, and a bright crescent moon.

Can you guess what two objects stand out on the foreground? Well, it’s the cypress tree and the church. This is because they both are pointy. These two things balance out the painting.

Starry Starry Night is one of my favourite Vincent Van Gogh paintings. It surely looks better then, his other painting Sunflowers.

Presenting as an Ambassador

Meeting the Mayor of Auckland was truly an honour. He was quite impressed with our presenting. The mayor wasn't there alone listening to us. There were also the people from Sunday News. And others too. Here's the link to see it. I forgot to mention that this was the first time we presented.

School Camp

On a beautiful sunny week, our Yr 5 & 6 students had a three day camp on. It started on Wednesday, and went until Friday which was the last day. On our camp there were 6 teams and we had our items too, which was awesome and I hope you like my recount.
The thing I am was looking forward to Is roller-blading and kayaking. The reason why I was looking forward to roller-blading was because I have not done roller skating in 2 years and I need to improve in it. And the reason Im looking forward to kayaking is because I have not been able to go swimming and do kayaking at all.The thing that I remember being funny, was when we did our item for the concert. Mr Somerville forgot to cut the music, and we did not have moves for that part. So we just followed Grace’s moves, and we survived it. We had a good reaction thanks to Grace.My goal for camp was to change my behaviour and improve my kayaking skills. The reason my goal Is to change my behavior is because I was most told off then before. And I achieved it, and my kayaking I achieved that goal too because I kayaked to the red pole and back to the beach that's how I achieved it. Well its been a tough week, and everyone was really tired from that long day at Swimarama. The thing I was most sad about is camp ending.I miss camp already.

School Picnic

“YES!”, I shouted as I got the news that our school picnic was on. Over 600 kids(including me) got to the reserve, all talking to each other about what they had planned for the day. I personally thought it was crazy, but cool, that our principal organized this!

When my friends and I went to the beach, I was tempted to play in the water. I finally remembered, we were allowed to paddle(paddling is when you put your feet in the water, but it is only allowed to be up to knee height). While paddling, I spotted the big rocks of clay.

Running to the chunks of clay, I slipped and cut my foot. Struggling to get up with my bloody foot, I broke a piece clay off the rock and skipped on to the water. As the clay softened, I molded it into a circle and stuck shells into them.

This years picnic was really fun because I got to spend more time with my friends, plus I kinda haven’t been to a beach in a while!
