Leah had a lot of dreams and goals for her future until these were all shattered in an accident. What future can Leah have now?
This is one of the texts in our book club. In Room 17 we choose which book we would like to read and discuss. Feel free to join in the discussion on this blog if you have read The Dreaming Place, or want to comment on our discussion.

Leah had a special place she loved to go to dream and be on her own. Do you have such a place? Tell us about it.
What kind of dreams and goals do you have for your future?
I don't have a place to dream but I do like to be alone. I have different places most of the time. Sometimes I use it to get away from my brother.
Leah was going to write a review of her accident 2 years ago. She has her own dreaming place where she dream of being a gymnast.
Do you have a dreaming place?
Time away from brothers is important. I have 3 brothers and there weren't many places to go and get away from them when I was a kid. Luckily I had a bedroom to myself though, that was probably my dreaming place.
What are some of your dreams Kaycee?
In a conversation you need to think about what has been said and respond to it. I know you are learning to do this as an ambassador Tyla.
Don't feel you need to review the story, this is a conversation or discussion.
Chapter 2
That would be so scary waking up in hospital like that. I think I would panic and want my family even though I'm an adult.
I do think that it could be quite a good thing not to remember the actual accident though. What do you think?
I didn't know?
I don't really know.
I've never been in a hospital before except for when my brother was sick. But really I've never been a patient at a hospital I think.
I always use to go to the hospital when I was little. I can just remember looking at the Winnie the poo on the wall.
Zane use to go in all the time. His asthma.
Why were you in the hospital Tyla?
Same as me.
Because of my asthma.
You've got asthma is well right?
Yes,yes I do.
I knew that.
Chapter 3
What a shock Leah would get! It is hard to even imagine what it would be like.
Why do you think none of her friends mentioned her arm?
People deal with bad news in different ways; withdrawal, anger, denial. How does the author show Leah is reacting?
I've been in this situation once but it wasn't me that had something wrong it was my aunty. Her ear to her arm was burnt but I didn't mention it to her.
Confused and angry.
I don't think I've ever been in this situation but even I had, I'd still wouldn't mention what's wrong.
That is a similar situation with your auntie Tyla. It would be quite difficult not to talk about the one thing that's on everybody's mind.
Chapter 4
Who is Leah blaming for the accident?
Leah doesn’t feel she can really talk to her close friends and family. Do you think it can be easier to discuss some topics with people who aren’t so close?
What topics do you think the counsellor might have discussed with Leah?
I think being Leah’s friends would be difficult right now. What do you think true friends can offer in times such as this?
MAybe her friends can help her to get use to using her arm in different sports.
Yes. I guess that could work. I think it would be easier talking to people aren't so close.
wow this story looks and sounds like real life.Mann i wish that would come true.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!.From Anamei
Chapter 5 and 6
Leah is having to make some big adjustments to her life. What sports and hobbies do you think she could Leah could be good at other than the ones mentioned. I was wondering about football, do you think having one arm would be a disadvantage in this sport?
How does Miss Skelton encourage Leah?
Why do you think Leah shares her story?
What do you take from her story? Is there something it has helped you realise or think?
Miss Skelton is very generous to help Leah get her confidence up. This is a story of courage and strength which is why I would recommend for kids like Leah. Even though with 1 arm you can still be normal like everybody else.
I think Miss Skelton helped Leah by being honest and not holding back to talk about her arm and like Tyla said "Even though with 1 arm you can still be normal like everybody else".
This book definitely had a theme of bravery. I enjoyed reading about Leah coming to realise that everybody can have dreams.
Thanks for your contribution to this book club Tyla, Kaycee and Anamei. It sounds as if you like this title too.
